Izzet Prowess Unprotected Clock

Competitive pilot guide

Deck thesisThe clock is the protection. Cast two spells a turn and finish before their removal outnumbers your threats.

Difficulty to pilot

Moderate
  • Almost every turn contains a sequencing decision, and the decision is the same shape each time: what is the second spell, and is it available before the first one is cast.
  • The deck reads as though it can protect a threat and cannot. Playing it well means unlearning the instinct to hold the free pump spell, which is the most common error and the one this guide leads with.
  • Burn is both removal and reach, and the split is decided per copy rather than per matchup.
  • The mana base is genuinely close to trivial, and the guide says so rather than inventing a decision: every fetch finds an untapped red source, and Lava Dart is fed by seven Mountains once the duals are counted.

Where it gets hardConverting every trigger into damage on the turn it happens, rather than assembling a board that looks strong and never attacks.

What the stage produces

A Monk with haste, or a flier that is four bigger than it was a moment ago

Primary risk

Building a board while their life total never moves, which is the losing shape of this deck
